If your staff use the stopwatch, but forget to end/stop the stopwatch at the end of the day, that stopwatch will be considered "abandoned" or "unsaved". This means the time entry is only partially complete and not saved to the database.
ClickTime will message each user if they have any running or abandoned stopwatches at the top near their name:
They can click the date to be brought to the Day View page for that time entry at any time.
If the employee does not resolve their unsaved stopwatches prior to leaving the organization, our system will not allow you to inactivate anyone with a running or abandoned stopwatch associated with their account. ClickTime offers a report specifically designed to help you find which employees have running or abandoned stopwatches in a date range, and will also message you on the person-level if this is preventing you from inactivating someone who no longer needs to track time.
This guide will go through both methods to find and address any unresolved stopwatches.
Please note: In order to address unsaved stopwatches, you will need to either:
- Use ClickTime as an "Administrator", or
- Use ClickTime as a Manager with multiple permissions. Specifically, you will need to be able to:
- Run Reports
- Override Timesheets, and
- Add/Edit People
- You will need to be able to do this for "all people" in order to see the "Running and Unsaved Stopwatch report"
If you are a Manager but do not have access to all of the above permissions, please contact your local Administrator for assistance. More information about the different permissions a Manager can have is available here.

Inactivating an Employee with a Running or Unsaved Stopwatch
Running or Unsaved Stopwatch Report
To view all running/unsaved stopwatches in your account for a time period, go to the Company --> Reports page and expand the "Miscellaneous" section of the page:
Click "Running and Unsaved Stopwatches", and then "Run Report" on the pop-up that appears. Next, set your date range and then "Run Report":
ClickTime will display any employees with a running/unsaved stopwatch in the time period you specified. You can use the "Notify" icon to send a message to the employee:
which will open up your email client to send a message to the employee with pre-filled text.
To fix the time entry yourself, click the date to be brought to the Timesheet Override page for that employee for that day:
You should then see a red stopwatch icon:
Hover your mouse over the icon and then choose whether you want to stop the stopwatch at 11:59 pm (the time when it automatically became unsaved), or if you want to enter another end time:
Alternatively, you can choose to delete the time entry row altogether using the trashcan icon.
If the time entry is from long enough in the past, this may be the best thing to do, as time associated with unsaved stopwatches was not saved to our database, and would not have been included in reports.
Don't forget to "Save" the changes. Then continue fixing any other unsaved stopwatches, or if all of them have been resolved, you should be able to inactivate the user now.
Inactivating an Employee with a Running or Unsaved Stopwatch
When you inactivate someone from the Company --> People page, the system will tell you if they have running/unsaved stopwatches, but will not provide details.
You can either use the report (as explained above) to find the specific days, or click into their Person Details page. Click "Edit Section" for the Basic Information section and then change the status to "Inactive". When you click "Update", a pop-up message will appear and indicate when there are running or unsaved stopwatches. You can click the date in the pop-up to be brought to Timesheet Override for that person and day:
From there, you should then see a red stopwatch icon for the affected time entry.
