Work Types let you classify projects by the kind of work they represent—such as Strategy, Discovery, Build, or Support. Once Work Types are applied to projects, the People Dashboard shows how your team's tracked time, labor costs, and billings are split across them.
Administrators create your company's list of Work Types. Managers then apply them to individual projects.
Before You Begin
- You must be an Administrator to set up Work Types.
- Your company needs at least 2 Work Types and can have up to 7.
- Choose names that match how you want to see time reported. A helpful question to ask: "When we look at the People Dashboard, what categories do we want to see?"
- Employees don't select a Work Type when entering time. Hours are categorized automatically based on the project they're entered against.
Add Work Types and Turn On the Feature
Navigation: Company > Preferences > Work Types
- Navigate to Company > Preferences, then select Work Types from the left menu.
- Under Work Type Tag, click + Add Work Type and enter a name.
- Click + Add Work Type again to add another. Repeat until you've added all of your Work Types.
- Turn on the Enable Work Types toggle. The toggle becomes available once at least two Work Types have been added.
- Click Save at the top or bottom of the Preferences page.
Note: Changes aren't saved until you click Save. If you leave the page first, your changes will be lost.
Rename a Work Type
- In Company > Preferences > Work Types, edit the name in the Work Type's field.
- Click Save.
Renaming doesn't remove the Work Type from any projects. Every project using it will show the new name.
Delete a Work Type
- Click the trash icon next to the Work Type.
- Review the confirmation window. It lists every project currently using that Work Type.
- Click Delete.
- Click Save to finalize the deletion.
Note: Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. The Work Type is removed from the timeline of every project that uses it.
Turn Off Work Types
To turn off Work Types, switch off the Enable Work Types toggle and click Save. Work Types are hidden throughout ClickTime, including on Project Details and the People Dashboard. Nothing is deleted—if you turn Work Types back on, everything is restored as it was.
Common Questions
Do employees need to do anything differently when entering time?
No. Employees enter time to projects as usual. ClickTime assigns each time entry to the Work Type that was active on its project on the date of the entry.
What happens to past time when I delete a Work Type?
The deleted Work Type is removed from each project's timeline, and the project's previous Work Type extends to cover those dates. If there was no previous Work Type, that time appears as N/A on the People Dashboard.
How are Work Types different from Phases?
Phases divide a project into parts that employees choose from when entering time. Work Types label the project as a whole, change by date, and don't require anything from employees.
