Each project can have one Work Type at a time, and its Work Type can change over time. Each change begins on a start date you choose, so a project can move from Discovery to Build to Support while keeping a record of each stage.
Before You Begin
- An Administrator must first set up and turn on Work Types.
- You need the Add/Edit Jobs permission. Project-limited managers can add Work Types only to projects they manage.
Add a Work Type to a Project
Navigation: Company > Projects > [Project Name] > Project Details > Work Types
- Navigate to Company > Projects and click the project name.
- On the Project Details tab, select Work Types from the left menu.
- Click Add Work Type. If the project already has Work Types, click Edit Section instead.
- Select a Work Type from the dropdown and enter a Start date.
- To schedule a future change, click + Add Work Type and add another row with a later start date.
- Click Update.
Note: Each row needs both a Work Type and a start date, and no two rows can share the same start date.
How the Work Type Timeline Works
Work Types don't have end dates. Each one stays in effect until the next one starts. The last Work Type continues through the project's end date, or indefinitely if the project doesn't have one.
| Work Type | Start | In effect |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | 09/01/2026 | Sep 1 – Sep 30 |
| Build | 10/01/2026 | Oct 1 – Nov 30 |
| Support | 12/01/2026 | Dec 1 onward |
After you click Update, rows are sorted by start date automatically, so you can add them in any order.
Time entered on the project counts toward whichever Work Type was in effect on the date of the time entry. Time entered before the first start date appears as N/A on the People Dashboard.
Edit or Remove a Work Type
- In the project's Work Types section, click Edit Section.
- Change the Work Type or start date, or click the trash icon to remove a row.
- Click Update.
Changes apply to past and future dates, so editing a start date also changes how existing time is counted on the People Dashboard.
Common Questions
Can a project use the same Work Type more than once?
Yes, as long as each row has a different start date. For example, a project can go from Marketing to Discovery and back to Marketing.
Why won't my changes save?
Check that every row has both a Work Type and a start date, and that no two rows use the same start date. Remove any blank rows with the trash icon, then click Update.
Do employees see Work Types on their timesheets?
No. Employees enter time to projects as usual, and ClickTime handles the Work Type automatically.
Why don't I see Work Types on Project Details?
Work Types haven't been turned on for your company. Contact your Administrator.
